The esophagus is a muscular tube that connects the mouth to the stomach. Esophageal cancer occurs when cancerous cells form in the lining of the esophagus. The larynx, also known as the voice box, is located in the neck and is responsible for producing sound. Postcricoid cancer, also known as hypopharyngeal cancer, is a type of cancer that develops in the area of the larynx closest to the esophagus, called the postcricoid region. Risk factors for postcricoid cancer include smoking, heavy alcohol consumption, and exposure to certain chemicals. Symptoms of postcricoid cancer may include difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, and a lump in the neck.
Both types of cancer are serious and treatment options include surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. Early diagnosis and treatment can improve the chances of a successful outcome.
