In this video Dr O'Donovan explains 11 potential causes for BREAST PAIN.

In this video we’re going to cover 11 possible causes of breast pain.

It’s important to note that there are many reasons breasts can be painful and although the reasons are not usually serious, if the pain doesn’t improve you should see your doctor.

I split causes down into ‘hormonal reasons’, ‘infections’, ‘injuries’, ‘non-physical related’ and ‘cancer’ including - cyclical breast pain, pregnancy related pain, mastitis, breast abscess, poorly fitting bras and more.

If you have breast pain you could try:

• wearing a supportive, well-fitting bra
• taking simple pain relief which can be purchased from the pharmacy and your local pharmacist will be able to advise you on this
• but if this isn’t working and you still experience pain then you should speak to a doctor. Likewise you should also speak to your doctor if there's a history of breast cancer in your family or if you think you might be pregnant you should do a pregnancy test.

Finally if you have any of the following symptoms or signs then you must seek urgent medical attention:

• you have breast pain and have a very high temperature or feel hot and shivery
• any part of your breast is red, hot or swollen
• there's a hard lump in your breast that does not move around
• you get nipple discharge, which may be streaked with blood
• 1 or both breasts change shape
• the skin on your breast is dimpled (like orange peel)
