Dr. James Cleary is a leading expert on global cancer pain management from the Pain and Policies Study Group, University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center, a WHO Collaborating Center.

Dr. Cleary outlines the discrepancies in cancer pain treatment across the globe. He notes that morphine is the gold standard in cancer pain treatment. Despite the fact that morphine is readily available and very inexpensive, national drug control laws interfere with the legitimate medical use of opioids for cancer pain relief. According to the International Narcotics Board and the World Health Organization, governments should make medical use of narcotic drugs, including morphine, available for adequate relief of pain and suffering worldwide.

This video was recorded during ESMO 2012, the Congress of the European Society for Medical Oncology. It is part of a series of presentations on the survey results of an international collaborative project on regulatory barriers to the availability and accessibility of opioids for cancer pain management in Africa, Asia, Latin America & the Caribbean, and the Middle East.
