Los cánceres más comunes (en orden descendente según el número estimado de casos nuevos en 2020) son: el cáncer de seno (mama), el cáncer de pulmón y bronquios, el cáncer de próstata, el cáncer de colon y recto, el melanoma (un cáncer de piel), el cáncer de vejiga, el linfoma no Hodgkin, el cáncer de riñón y pelvis renal, el cáncer de endometrio, la leucemia, el cáncer de páncreas, el cáncer de tiroides y el cáncer de hígado.
El melanoma, el tipo más grave de cáncer de piel, se forma en las células (melanocitos) que producen melanina, el pigmento que le da color a la piel. El melanoma también puede manifestarse en los ojos y, rara vez, dentro del cuerpo, como en la nariz o la garganta.
El melanoma a menudo se puede descubrir tempranamente, cuando hay mayores probabilidades de ser curado. Algunas personas tienen un mayor riesgo de padecer melanoma que otras, pero es importante saber que cualquier persona puede padecer melanoma.
Entre el 20 y 30 % de los melanomas se detecta en lunares existentes, mientras que entre el 70 y 80 % surge en pieles de aspecto normal.
