Colon cancer is a type of cancer that starts in your colon (large intestine) or rectum. Your colon and rectum are the organs that make up the lower portion of your digestive system. Colon cancer typically affects older adults, though it can happen at any age. It usually begins as small, noncancerous (benign) clumps of cells called polyps that form on the inside of the colon. Over time some of these polyps can become colon cancers.

In fact, many of the symptoms of colorectal cancer can also be caused by other problems, such as infection, hemorrhoids, irritable bowel syndrome or inflammatory bowel disease.

Signs and symptoms of colon cancer include:-
A persistent change in your bowel habits, including diarrhea or constipation or a change in the consistency of your stool.
Rectal bleeding or blood in your stool.
Persistent abdominal discomfort, such as cramps, gas or pain.
A feeling that your bowel doesn't empty completely.
Weakness or fatigue.
Unexplained weight loss.

If colon cancer spreads to other parts of your body, you may also experience:
Jaundice, or yellow eyes and skin.
Swelling in the hands or feet.
Breathing difficulties.
Chronic headaches.
Blurry vision.
Bone fractures.

Factors that may increase your risk of colon cancer include:

Low-fiber, high-fat diet
Older age
A personal history of colorectal cancer or polyps
Inflammatory intestinal conditions
Family history of colon cancer
Obesity
A sedentary lifestyle
Diabetes

You can take steps to reduce your risk of colon cancer by making changes in your everyday life:

Eat a variety of fruits, vegetables and whole grains
Stop smoking
Exercise most days of the week
Maintain a healthy weight
