By injecting chemotherapy directly into patients' livers, Ohio State doctors are improving outcomes while cutting down on surgery and recovery times.

The surgical method, called hepatic artery infusion, allows doctors to deliver chemotherapy into the liver through a catheter, potentially reducing the size of tumors while limiting side effects by relegating the treatment to the liver.

The nature of the surgery limits the time patients spend in the operating room, and enables them to return home more quickly.

"The procedure, if done minimally-invasively, takes about three hours," says Allan Tsung, MD, the director of the Division of Surgical Oncology at the OSUCCC โ€“ James "Most of the time, patients can go home the next day."
