In this video, we learn about chemoport or port-a-cath, a novel method for chemotherapy or systemic therapy as a part of cancer treatment. Unfortunately most cancers are diagnosed at a stage when surgery or radiation is not possible. In such circumstances, chemotherapy becomes the prime treatment option. But most of the chemotherapy is given in multiple sessions spanning over months. And sometimes due not recurrence, has to be given again. In such situations, using traditional iv cannula can be very painful and distressing and required multiple punctures in the arms. Many of these drugs are vesicant or irritant to the veins (blood vessels) and hence further cause vessel damage. Combined with need for repeated blood collections for investigations and to transfuse blood, it becomes a big issue for patient. And patients sometimes actually get terrified with the thought of repeated punctures to find veins for these purposed.

Here's where the chemoport device comes in handy and a single device implanted once can be used for a year or more for giving chemotherapy, blood transfusions, medications, blood collection for investigations and so on. If used well, it can make the life of a cancer patient very comfortable and make the chemotherapy journey less miserable. With a keen interest in Interventional Radiology from his PG days, he refined his skillset by a 2-year fellowship program in Hepatobiliary and Oncology IR in the prestigious Sir Ganga Ram hospital followed by expanding his spectrum of IR procedures in Jaypee Hospital, Noida catering to patients from 19 different countries as a center of excellence in IR.

Dr. Gaurav Gangwani has been a pioneer to perform few interventions in India which a couple IRs perform including procedures like thyroid nodule and parathyroid adenoma ablations, vasculomimetic stenting for juxta-anastomotic stenosis in AV fistulas and endovascular therpay for veno-occlusive erectile dysfunction.
