Dr Jaydev Panchwagh explains brain tumor surgery. Meningioma is a type of benign brain tumor and can present itself with symptoms of a simple headache or with fits or paralysis.
What are brain tumors? What are causes of brain tumors? What are the symptoms of brain tumors? How is brain tumor diagnosis made? How are brain tumors treated? Can brain tumors be cured?
These are the questions in the minds of many people and patients. Brain tumor education is the main aim of this film.
Dr Jaydev Panchawagh presents a case of a benign large brain tumor, called Meningioma which was successfully resected and also answers these above-mentioned questions. He also shows the MRI for brain tumor and explains itโ€™s excision with a surgical video.
Brain tumors are of many types, both benign and malignant. The exact cause in many patients is not known. Some are arising originally in the brain (primary brain tumors) while others are secondaries from a cancer present elsewhere in the body (metastasis). There are many types of brain tumors based on the area where it is present: Frontal, Parietal, Temporal, Occipital, cerebellar, thalamic, hypothalamic, medullary, Cerebello-pontine (CP angle) etc.
Depending on where the tumor is present or how big it is, and how quickly it grows, brain tumors may have different symptoms: Headache, dizziness, paralysis, speech disturbances, vision problems, hormonal problems, facial paralysis, unconsciousness, convulsions (seizures or fits), loss of balance etc
Brain tumors are diagnosed by MRI or CT scan. Surgery and excision is main treatment of brain tumour. Occasionally brain tumours may need to be treated with radiation or chemotherapy. Benign tumours generally have good prognosis. Malignant tumours can also have a good prognosis depending on the stage.
