रेक्टल कैंसर में स्टोमा बॅग जरुरी है क्या ? | Stoma Bag in Rectal Cancer | Dr. Praveen Kammar
In this video, Dr. Praveen Kammar (Consultant Surgical Oncologist, SSO Hospital, Mumbai) will answer a frequently asked question i.e., is it necessary to attach a stoma bag to rectal cancer patients.
A colostomy is a surgical operation in which the colon is shortened to remove a damaged part and the cut end diverted to an opening in the abdominal wall. It can be temporary or permanent.
A stoma is an opening in the abdominal wall where a colostomy bag is inserted to collect faeces from the digestive tract. Immediately after a colostomy operation, doctors attach a bag to the stoma.
Whether a person requires a permanent stoma or a temporary one depends on which part of the rectum cancer has emerged.
The rectum is the end section of the tube through which solid waste leaves the body. It is about 12 to 15 cm long & is divided into 3 parts – Upper, Middle & Lower Rectum. A stoma is not required when the rectum cancer is situated in the upper rectum only. A temporary stoma may be required when the cancer is spread to the middle rectum.
The lower rectum is the part where the sphincter mechanism is situated, it is an important area that helps you regulate your bowel movements. When cancer involves the sphincter permanent stoma is attached to the patient.
