A childhood cancer foundation based in the U.S. estimates that 160,000 children around the world are diagnosed each year with cancer. The odds of survival are better in developed countries than elsewhere. But a large scale study of patients in North America who are living into adulthood shows that many are not getting the follow-up medical exams they need. VOA's Melinda Smith reports that may be putting them at greater risk for more illness.


Jason Shohet, MD, PhD, the Ali and John Pierce Chair of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, division chief of pediatric hematology and oncology, and associate professor of pediatrics, is focused on developing more effective and less toxic therapies for childhood cancers with a special focus on neuroblastoma. New to his role at UMass Medical School, Dr. Shohet is an accomplished physician-scientist who has contributed significantly to the understanding of the disease through his nearly 20 years of study as co-chair of the Neuroblastoma Research Program at Texas Children’s Cancer Center, Baylor College of Medicine.

Dr. Rashmi Dalvi, Immediate Past Continental President of the International Society of Paediatric Oncology (SIOP) Asia and member of the SIOP Education and Training Committee, provides her expertise on this topic.
Dr Rashmi Dalvi is a Senior Consultant in Pediatric Hematology Oncology at Bombay Hospital & SRCC-NH Children's Hospital and a Professor and Head of the Department of Pediatrics, Bombay Hospital Institute of Medical Sciences. Dr. Dalvi is also the Founder member and Past National Coordinator, Training Program on Pediatric Oncology for Pediatricians (NTP-PPO, India) and Executive Council member at the Asian Pediatric Hematology Oncology Group (APHOG-SIOP Asia). She has over 35 years experience in treating childhood cancers in India.
In conjunction with International Childhood Cancer Day 2023, the International Pediatric Association partners with the International Society of Paediatric Oncology (SIOP) on a series of educational videos surrounding childhood cancer.
