Mouth Cancer

In this video Dr. Joseph Nemeth discusses snus, snuff, dipping and other forms of chewing tobacco or smokeless tobacco.
Smokeless tobacco is a type of tobacco that is put between the lip and the gums so the nicotine is absorbed through the oral mucosa in the mouth to get a nicotine high.
All forms of tobacco can be very harmful and very dangerous to the tissues of the mouth. Snuff can irritate the cheek, the lip and the gum tissue.
Snus is different because it often comes in pouches, so one can control the dosage. However, this smokeless tobacco product is no different or healthier than any other forms of dipping.
Some people may get white lesions which almost look like burns. This condition is called Leukoplakia which takes the appearance of white patches or spots on the inside of the mouth. It can be caused by chewing tobacco, heavy smoking, and alcohol use. These lesions can be pre-cancerous.
Snus can irritate the tissue and can cause oral cancer or mouth cancer. We have seen patients who have had precancerous leisons fro snus, snuff, and other tobacco products.
Chewing tobacco can cause recession of the gum tissue.
Smokeless tobacco can also stain the teeth and cause permanent discoloring of the teeth.
Is the nicotine rush really worth the danger to the tissues of the mouth? These products have been shown to increase your risk of mouth cancer or oral cancer.
Please keep your mouth health, your body will be healthier.
