When a veteran seeks service connection for a condition or disability, VA assigns a disability rating based on severity. Ratings range from 0 to 100% and determine the amount of monthly compensation a veteran will receive. Veterans with a 70% VA disability rating are entitled to certain additional VA benefits, such as TDIU, GI Bill benefits, DIC, and others. Tune in to learn more!

John Boozman is Arkansas’s senior U.S. Senator and the dean of the state’s Congressional delegation.
A fifth-generation Arkansan, John was raised in Fort Smith and graduated from Northside High School. He went on to play football for the University of Arkansas Razorbacks while completing his pre-optometry requirements. He graduated from the Southern College of Optometry in 1977 and entered private practice that same year co-founding a family business with his brother that would ultimately become a major provider of eye care to Northwest Arkansas.
Decades of experience as a successful healthcare provider and a small business owner guide John’s approach to governing. He is committed to advocating for economic policies that help Arkansas’s small businesses continue to grow and add jobs to our state’s economy. And since agriculture accounts for nearly one-quarter of Arkansas’s economic activity, John has been a consistent champion for our state’s farmers, ranchers and loggers and was instrumental in the fight for an equitable farm bill.
As the son of an Air Force Master Sergeant, John learned at an early age about the sacrifices of our men and women in uniform, as well as the unique challenges military families face. He brings these values with him to Washington where he is committed to enhancing the quality of life for both our veterans and their families. John has authored provisions to extend successful federal homeless veteran programs, expand treatments for our wounded warriors and modernize educational benefits under the GI Bill.
First elected to the Senate in 2010, John was sworn in for a second term on January 3, 2017. Prior to serving in the Senate, he represented the people of the Third District of Arkansas in the U.S. House of Representatives
John serves on four committees in the 117th Congress:
- Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry (Ranking Member)
- Committee on Appropriations (Ranking Member, Subcommittee on Military Construction, Veterans Affairs and Related Agencies)
- Committee on Environment & Public Works
- Committee on Veterans' Affairs

In today's video, Marvin from Medicare School is breaking down exactly how VA Benefits work with Medicare, and how if you are a Veteran 65 or older, what Medicare package is right for you, what benefits or opportunities you received as a Veteran with medicare, and exactly how medicare works for those who served in the military.
Marvin will also explain how Medicare works through the VA system for military and veterans and the timeline and steps necessary to sign up for Medicare as a veteran.
For example, through the VA, Military veterans aren't required to take Medicare Part B, but in doing so, you can only add part b medicare in the future during the general enrollment period which is only the first 3 months of the year, and for every 12 months you go without Medicare part b, you'll acquire a 10% penalty on your part b premium once it's added to your medicare package and this is a lifetime penalty, meaning even if you were to wait just one year before adding medicare part b, you'd have to pay the additional 10% fee roughly an extra $33 per month for the rest of your life!
Marvin also discusses Tricare for life and what that means for veterans over the age of 65 and their medicare, who accepts Tricare for life, and what Tricare for life covers!
Lastly, Marvin discusses using a Medicare Advantage plan ONLY, if you're a VA or Tricare, you don't have to have a prescription plan, do inpatient and outpatient only, and rely on the VA or Tricare for life for prescription medicines.

Nexus letters are technical reports, also referred to as independent medical opinions, that establish a link between an injury or illness and a veteran's service. Such letters, usually drafted by medical professionals like doctors, nurse practitioners, or PAs, detail how one condition relates to another or to the veteran's service. The letters can range from a few sentences to lengthy reports, with the emphasis on presenting a rational connection. Leah differentiates between primary and secondary service connections, detailing examples for each. Primary connections have a direct relationship to one's service, while secondary connections relate a condition to another service-connected condition. She also highlights presumptive service connections that are assumed by the VA based on specific criteria. Leah emphasizes that while Nexus letters determine service-related connections, Disability Benefits Questionnaires (DBQs) help ascertain the rating.
