ABOUT DR. BREWER
Dr. Brewer started as an Emergency Doctor. After seeing too many preventable heart attacks, he went to Johns Hopkins to learn Preventive Medicine. While there, he went on the run the post-graduate training program (residency) in Preventive Medicine. From there, he made a career of practicing and managing preventive medicine and primary care clinics. His later role in this area was Chief Medical Officer for Premise, which has close to 1,000 primary care/prevention clinics. He was also the Chief Medical Officer for MDLIVE, the second largest telemedicine company. More recently, he founded PrevMed, a heart attack, and stroke prevention clinic.

At PrevMed, we focus on heart attack, stroke, and cognitive decline. We serve patients who have already experienced an event as well as those who have not developed a diagnosis or event. Dr. Brewer provides services via telemedicine or in person if you're in the Lexington, KY area. We find a lot of undiagnosed prediabetes or insulin resistance. Treating unrecognized risk factors like prediabetes allows reduction of risk and prevention of disease.

Title: Werner-His disease

Werner-His disease: Named for the German physician Heinrich Werner (who did not describe Werner's premature aging syndrome) and the Swiss physician Wilhelm His, Jr. (who did describe the bundle of His in the heart), this is a louse-borne disease that was first recognized in the trenches of World War I and so was called trench fever. Werner-His disease (trench fever) is estimated to have affected more than a million people in Russia and on the war fronts in Europe. Trench fever was again a major problem in the military in World War II and is seen endemically in Mexico, Africa, E. Europe, and elsewhere. Urban trench fever occurs among the homeless people and people with alcoholism today. Outbreaks have been documented, for example, in Seattle, Baltimore (among injection-drug users), Marseilles (France) and Burundi. The cause of trench fever is Bartonella quintana (also called Rochalimaea quintana), an unusual rickettsial organism that multiplies in the gut of the body louse. Transmission of the rickettsia to people can occur by rubbing infected louse feces into abraded (scuffed) skin or into the conjunctivae (whites of the eyes). The disease is classically a 5-day fever. The onset of symptoms is sudden with high fever, severe headache, back pain and leg pain and a fleeting rash.

Discovering the Secrets of #Human #Ageing: Breakthrough #Gene Study in Fruit Flies
Discovering the Secrets of #Human #Ageing: Breakthrough #Gene Study in Fruit Flies administrator 0 Views • 2 years ago

"In this exciting new video, we explore a breakthrough discovery by scientists funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC).

Dr Lynne Cox and Dr Robert Saunders from the University of Oxford and The Open University have found a fast and effective way to investigate important aspects of human ageing by discovering a gene in fruit flies that enables them to study the effects ageing has on DNA. The researchers demonstrate the value of this model in helping us to understand the ageing process in a new work published in the journal Ageing Cell.

Dr Cox explains that they study a premature human ageing disease called Werner syndrome to help them understand normal ageing. The key to this disease is changes in a single gene called WRN, which causes patients to age quickly. Until now, scientists have only been able to study the gene in a test tube. However, by working on this gene in fruit flies, they can model human ageing in a powerful experimental system.

Join us as we explore the potential of this discovery and what it means for future research on ageing.
