On June 29, 2020, Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) presented a virtual childhood cancer lecture featuring Sharon E. Plon, MD, PhD. Dr. Plon's lecture focuses on the many discoveries over the last five years related to genetic susceptibility to childhood cancer that has resulted from exome and genome sequencing of different pediatric cancer cohorts.

During this lecture, participants will:
1) Learn about the overall proportion of childhood cancer patients that have germline susceptibility.
2) Understand the specific relationships between tumor histopathology and the likelihood of identifying a variant in cancer susceptibility genes.
3) Learn about the unexpected relationship between previously identified adult cancer susceptibility genes and childhood cancer.

William: Fighting Childhood Cancer with St. Baldrick's

This is William. He is 14 years old. Ten years ago, just after his fourth birthday, he was diagnosed with a rare childhood cancer called pleuropulmonary blastoma. He had to have surgery to remove tumors from his lungs followed by months of chemotherapy to make sure it stayed away. Will survived his battle with childhood cancer, but many do not. In the U.S., one in five children diagnosed with cancer will not survive.

During Will's treatment, his family started hosting their own St. Baldrick's event to raise money for lifesaving childhood cancer treatment. In the words of Will: "Research money goes a long way, who knows, it could maybe find a cure for cancer!"
