We are joined by Suellen Crano, a 21-year peritoneal mesothelioma survivor, who shares her story from the early stages of diagnosis and beyond. Suellen was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2001 after several years of seeking a diagnosis. While not typical in many ways, Suellen's journey includes going from feeling alone, and not knowing any other patients for years, to finding a supportive community of patients and family members.

Dr. Raja Flores discusses different types of mesothelioma tumors and how they affect treatment and life expectancy.

Kevin Blyth, MBChB, MD, FRCP, University of Glasgow, Glasgow, UK, reflects on the evolving treatment landscape of mesothelioma, highlighting combination immunotherapy as the new standard of care for this patient population. Dr Blyth also touches on current unmet needs such as therapeutic approaches for patients who do not respond to checkpoint inhibition, as well as optimal management of early-stage mesothelioma which is becoming of increased importance due to improvements in the diagnostic pathway. Riyaz Shah, BSc(Hons), MBBS, FRCP, PhD, Kent Oncology Centre, Maidstone, UK, provides insights into the SYSTEMS-2 trial which suggests that mesothelioma may be more radiosensitive than generally thought. The study aimed to determine whether administering higher doses of radiotherapy better controls pain in patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM). While the results were not statistically significant, when considering the secondary endpoint of OS, an interesting survival difference was noted. This immature data suggests that higher-dose radiotherapy treatment could affect survival outcomes. This new research avenue feeds nicely into upcoming trials such as the HIT-Meso study (NCT05655078).
