Acute pancreatitis is an inflammatory condition of the pancreas most commonly caused by biliary tract disease or alcohol abuse. Damage to the pancreas causes local release of digestive proteolytic enzymes that autodigest pancreatic tissue. Acute pancreatitis usually presents with epigastric pain radiating to the back, nausea and vomiting, and epigastric tenderness on palpation. The diagnosis is made based on the clinical presentation, elevated serum pancreatic enzymes, and findings on imaging (CT, MRI, ultrasound) that suggest acute pancreatitis. Treatment is mostly supportive and includes bowel rest, fluid resuscitation, and pain medication. Enteral feeding is usually quickly resumed once the pain and inflammatory markers begin to subside. Interventional procedures may be indicated for the treatment of underlying conditions, such as ERCP or cholecystectomy in gallstone pancreatitis. Localized complications of pancreatitis include necrosis, pancreatic pseudocysts, and abscesses. Systemic complications involve sepsis, ARDS, organ failure, and shock and are associated with a considerable rise in mortality.

Chronic pancreatitis is a long-term, inflammatory disease that causes progressive replacement of normal pancreatic tissue into scar tissue. Its causes are numerous, and as disease progresses the pancreas becomes inflamed and damaged. There is loss of ability to produce enzymes needed for normal digestive processes which cause maldigestion, malabsorption and malnutrition. Persons with chronic pancreatitis should have a nutritional assessment and follow-up by a registered dietitian. A dietitian will assess your nutritional status and recommend a good nutrition plan as well as monitor your progress to see how well your nutrition plan and changes are helping your body. A good diet, good hydration, the right nutritional supplements and when necessary, pancreatic enzymes treatments are important in managing your nutrition in chronic pancreatitis.

How does chronic pancreatitis change over time? Does this disease advance quickly? An expert in digestive system diseases, Chris Forsmark, MD, of the University of Florida, describes what patients and caregivers should know about chronic pancreatitis, including possible ways to slow and prevent more damage to the pancreas. He describes the need for regular care, what to do if you have other health conditions, and the most important habit to quit when you have chronic pancreatitis.

Logan (8) has been suffering from hereditary pancreatitis since he was 4 years old. His mother Erica Williams talks about how the chronic disease affects them as a family, how Logan's severe pain leaves them helpless, and how much they hope for a cure.
Although Logan has access to one of the best children's hospitals, chronic pancreatitis is a progressive disease without any treatment. In this video from summer 2020, his family shares that they are hopeful that a cure for hereditary chronic pancreatitis is out there. We are working on turning their hope into a reality.
Mission: Cure is committed to cure chronic and recurrent acute pancreatitis using impact investing and innovative financing. Our webinars educate patients, families and clinicians about pancreatitis.
