When cancer cells develop in the lower throat, especially in the hypopharynx lining, the resulting throat cancer is called hypopharyngeal cancer. Unfortunately, early symptoms of hypopharyngeal cancer are nonexistent which results in advanced state detection and poor prognosis. Harvard Medical School researchers have reported a higher risk for hypopharyngeal cancer in those who smoke or have vitamin A deficiencies. Oftentimes, preclinical transfection studies in model cancer culture lines are used to investigate biochemical pathways and targets of cancerous tumors. The FaDu hypopharyngeal tumor was first derived from a Hindi Caucasian 56-YO male. Both the FaDu and HT-29 cell lines have been shown to activate neutrophils and produce proinflammatory cytokines. The FaDu throat cancer model is a transfection-suitable host and has been used for studying squamous-cell pharyngeal carcinoma. Altogen Biosystems’ highly efficient, lipid-based FaDu-specific transfection reagent kit can be found at altogen.com:
