His outlook on life, according to his family and friends, is remarkable. Matt Bissett lives every day with a zeal even cancer can’t slow. At 22 years old, Bissett, of Clifton Park, faced a tough challenge during his senior year as a triple major at Houghton College near Buffalo – a Ewing’s sarcoma diagnosis. Watch as he credits the staff at the Melodies Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders at the Bernard & Millie Duker Children’s Hospital at Albany Medical Center for helping him take on his toughest assignment yet.

Rudy was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma, a rare cancer that often forms in the bones. Despite undergoing major brain surgery, including the implantation of a custom piece of polyethylene designed from a 3D map of his skull, Rudy was only in the hospital for one day.
With Beacon Children’s Hospital and Dr. Fulkerson Rudy was able to receive expert care close to home, allowing him to be close to his family and friends and to have a normal life.

CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation SA will host a series of CPD accredited webinars on childhood cancers to increase disease knowledge of Healthcare Professionals and in doing so reduce the mortality and morbidity of children with cancer.

This webinar took place on the 4th of May 2022, hosted by Prof Jennifer Geel and the topic was bone tumours in children and adolescents.

The talk covered epidemiology, presentation, diagnosis, management and long term follow up of children and adolescents with bone tumours. It will also touch on psychosocial and ethical issues related to the care of young patients with bone tumours.

Levi Grubb, a teenage boy from Dickson, Tennessee, was bathing one night and felt a bump under his armpit. Not long after that, a biopsy confirmed he had epithelioid sarcoma (ES), a rare form of cancer that can occur in children and teenagers.

Cancer treatment is incredibly complicated. Sarcomas are types of cancers that begin in bones or soft tissues of the body. There are more than 70 types of sarcomas. Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt is nationally ranked for cancer care and has the only integrated sarcoma clinic in the southeastern United States, in which a wide range of oncologists and surgeons can provide every treatment available for pediatric patients

Scott Borenstein, pediatric oncologist, and Jennifer Halpern, orthopedic oncologist, saw Levi at the multidisciplinary bone tumor clinic where patients get integrated sarcoma care at a single site. Levi went through chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation therapy to eradicate his tumor.

Five years after his tumor was discovered, Levi is now a graduate of the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy.
