Beacon Children’s Hospital and Dr. Fulkerson treated Rudy who was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma, a rare cancer that often forms in the bones.

Despite undergoing major brain surgery, including the implantation of a custom piece of polyethylene designed from a 3D map of his skull, Rudy was only in the hospital for one day.
Rudy received expert care close to home that allowed him to be close to his family and friends and to have a normal life.

Ewing sarcoma and Giant cell tumour, both are considered tumors of unknown origin.
Ewing sarcoma is a malignant tumor of bone with neuroectodermal differentiation.

It is much more common in children than in adults.

Ewing sarcoma usually arises from the diaphysis or shafts of long bones.

Radiologically, they show of layers of reactive bone formation called onion skin lesion.

Microscopically, they are composed of small blue cells with Homer wright Rosettes

Shelby Robin was diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma at age 12. Shelby was an athletic and active child, who continued to participate in sports and cheerleading, even after the cancer necessitated the amputation of her left foot.

Now a clinical nurse in the Children's Cancer Hospital at MD Anderson, Shelby was the the recipient of the 2015 Brown Foundation Award for Excellence in Oncology Nursing.

Formerly known as the Ethel Fleming Arceneaux Outstanding Nurse-Oncologist Award, the recognition is the institution’s highest nursing honor among the nearly 3,000 nurses at MD Anderson. The Brown Foundation, Inc. established the award in 1982.
