La mayor parte del intestino grueso está compuesto por el colon, el cual es un conducto muscular de aproximadamente 5 pies de longitud. Las partes del colon reciben sus nombres según la dirección en la que se desplazan los alimentos a través de ellas.
La primera sección se llama colon ascendente. Comienza con una bolsa llamada ciego, adonde llega el alimento no digerido desde el intestino delgado. Se extiende hacia arriba sobre el costado derecho del abdomen.
La segunda sección se llama colon transverso. Se extiende a través del cuerpo desde el lado derecho hacia el lado izquierdo.
La tercera sección se llama colon descendente, ya que desciende (se dirige hacia abajo) en el lado izquierdo
La cuarta sección se conoce como colon sigmoide debido a su forma en "S". El colon sigmoide se une al recto, el cual conecta con el ano.
El cáncer de colon es un tipo de cáncer que comienza en el intestino grueso (colon). El colon es la parte final del tubo digestivo.
El cáncer de colon suele afectar a los adultos mayores, aunque puede ocurrir a cualquier edad. Por lo general, comienza como grupos pequeños y no cancerosos (benignos) de células llamados pólipos que se forman en el interior del colon. Con el tiempo, algunos de estos pólipos pueden convertirse en cáncer de colon.
El cáncer colorrectal es el que se origina en el colon o el recto. A estos cánceres también se les puede llamar cáncer de colon o cáncer de recto (rectal) dependiendo del lugar donde se originen. El cáncer de colon y el cáncer de recto a menudo se agrupan porque tienen muchas características comunes.
El cáncer se origina cuando las células en el cuerpo comienzan a crecer en forma descontrolada. Casi cualquier célula del cuerpo puede convertirse en cáncer y propagarse a otras partes del cuerpo.

What is colorectal cancer?

What are the risk factors of colon cancer?
There are several risk factors we can count. However, the most important one is older age. The chances of having colon cancer increases with age.
There are other risk factors like:
History of inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
Family history of colorectal cancer or colorectal polyps
Approximately 5% of cases are attribute to genetic causes such as Familial adenomatous polyposis & Lynch syndrome
Some lifestyle factors may also contribute to an increase risk of colorectal cancer like
Low-fibre and High fat diet
A diet low in fruit and vegetables
Lack of regular physical exercise, alcohol consumption and tobacco use
Here are the signs & symptoms of colon cancer
1. Change in bowel habits:
Change in bowel habits including constipation or diarrhoea that lasts for more than a few days.
2. Narrowing of Stool:
You may also have stools that appear narrower than usual or have a different size or shape than normal.
3. Blood in your stool:
Bright Red blood or Blood in your stool that makes it look dark brown or black can also be ****ociated with the colon cancer.
4. Abdominal pain and bloating:
Pain in your **** or abdominal area.The abdominal pain in colorectal cancer may be due to partial or complete obstruction of the bowl or evasion of the cancer into the peritoneum.
5. Unexplained anaemia:
If you are anemic, you may find that you are tired, weak and may experience fatigue that improve upon resting.
6. Palpable M****:
Swollen abdominal m**** can be palpable on the right lower quadrant of abdomen
7. Tenesmus:
It is a feeling or sensation of urge to defecate and also a sensation of incomplete defecation.
Other possible signs of colon cancer are:
8. Unexplained weigth-loss which means you are losing weight without trying.
9. Vomiting
10. Fever
