Video abstract of review paper "Acute lymphoblastic leukemia in adolescents and young adults -- from genomics to the clinics" published in the open access Clinical Oncology in Adolescents and Young Adults journal by Saad Sirop Kenderian and Mark R Litzow.
Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in adolescents and young adults (AYA) represents a unique and challenging disease entity. Despite the recent improvement of survival in this population over the last decade, it is still lagging behind the excellent cure rates obtained in pediatric ALL.
This special population of AYA receives care from pediatric as well as adult hematologists and can be treated on pediatric or adult protocols. There is a substantial difference in disease biology, response to chemotherapy, and allogeneic stem cell transplantation between pediatric and AYA patients.
This review discusses current controversies in the management of AYA, outcomes following treatment with pediatric and adult protocols, and the role of allogeneic stem cell transplantation. It focuses on the unique clinical, biological, and socioeconomic characteristics of this population that might partly explain the inferior outcomes.
This review also explores recent advances in genomic profiling and emerging treatments in ALL.

"I was six months pregnant and started getting various symptoms, but a lot of which were masked by pregnancy."
Sophie Sutton was pregnant in 2017 when she began to feel unwell, but she put her symptoms down to morning sickness.
However, halfway through her pregnancy, Sophie was diagnosed with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (T-ALL).
Here, she recounts her #SpotLeukaemia story http://bit.ly/SophieSutton

Panelists give their perspectives on the optimal timing of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).

Mark, Kelly, David, Jonjo and Linda describe their experience in preparing to receive a bone marrow transplant in treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), including what it's like to receive chemotherapy.
Each video in this series covers a different chapter in the journey of receiving a bone marrow transplant, a treatment option for some adults diagnosed with ALL.1
Whilst every cancer patient's experience is different, this video series hopes to give an insight into real stories, offer some practical advice and give support to anyone who has received a cancer diagnosis. However, individuals should always speak to their doctor or healthcare team when making any treatment decisions.
Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia is a rare form of blood cancer that starts from white blood cells in the bone marrow. Although the majority of cases of ALL are diagnosed in younger people, it can also develop in adults.2
