Myelofibrosis (MF) is a blood disorder characterized by bone marrow scarring, or fibrosis, and disordered production of blood cells. Certain gene mutations in the body lead to a myelofibrosis diagnosis and those patients can also accumulate additional mutations that may spark the development of acute leukemia in the future. The risk of transformation to acute leukemia depends on a number of factors, such as blood cell counts, and are monitored for each individual patient. For patients with myelofibrosis that transform to acute leukemia, a bone marrow transplant may be required for treatment.
