The Parotid Gland is one of the salivary glands that produces saliva and lubricates food in the mouth.

It is fairly common to have a tumor in this gland and 80% of these tumors are benign but that means that 20% are cancerous.

In this case the tumor has been biopsied using the needle biopsy technique. It is highly likely that it is a benign tumor.

Removing a parotid tumor is difficult because the nerve that helps you smile and close your eyes passes right though the parotid gland. So as a safety factor we attach a 4 channel nerve integrity monitor to monitor various branches of the nerve by sensing the electrical activity in the muscles while we perform the parotid tumor removal.

This lets us know if we are endangering the nerve during the surgery. It also allows us to purposely stimulate the nerve during parotidectomy surgery to see its course and make it easier to avoid it.

This Parotidectomy went smoothly, sometimes it can take up to 3 hours.

Dr. Ariel Waitzman and Dr. Fred Lopatin performed this surgery at a surgery center in Dearborn Michigan. If you would like to schedule an appointment please visit https://dearbornent.com or simply call 313.582.8853
