What is chronic lymphocytic leukemia and how is it managed?

Dr Mary Ann Anderson, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre & Royal Melbourne Hospital, Melbourne, Australia

Dr Mary Ann Anderson discusses what is chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) and how it is managed.

CLL is a low grade (slow growing) B-cell lymphoma that develops often over months to years. The healthy B-cells, that help fight infection by developing antibodies, that can change into malignant (cancerous) B-cells that do not fight infection like they should.

Small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL) and CLL are essentially the same disease. In CLL malignant cells can be seen in the blood, however SLL mostly stays in the lymphatic system.

The video discusses:
• Symptoms at diagnosis
• Diagnosis and staging
• Genetic testing & next generation sequencing
• Management of CLL/SLL
• Treatment in CLL/SLL
• Chemotherapy – FCR (fludarabine, cyclophosphamide & rituximab)
• Management in the relapsed or refractory CLL/SLL
• Ibrutinib (BTK inhibitor)
• Venetoclax (BCL2 inhibitor)
