Westwood students to donate hair for cancer wigs
WESTWOOD, Ohio (Adam Clements) -- A moving gesture Thursday at Mother of Mercy High School as students and teachers chop off their locks to show their support for cancer patients as part of Pantene Beautiful Lengths program.
The Pantene Beautiful Lengths program was established to encourage women to cut their hair and donate it for wigs to made for cancer patients who lose their hair during chemotherapy treatments.
The school first held the program back in 2011 and had such a tremendous response from the student body, they decided to do it again.
Students who have participated in the past say it's a truly moving experience. While it's a scary thought to chop off all your hair, it's nothing compared to what a cancer patient feels who may not have a choice in the matter.
"You're like, oh my God, I'm never going to get my hair back, it's going to take so long to grow back," says senior Lauren Dinkelacker, "but realizing it's going for a good cause, they're going to be so grateful, I didn't feel bad for the better cause."
"It really struck me hard but after a while I kind of realized this is my time to do it, I'm gonna get through this." Anna Bunke has been battling cancer since she was in the seventh grade. She's now been in remission for six months and she'll be the featured speaker at Thursday's assembly.
The school tells us it takes four ponytails to make one wig.
