URNARY BLADDER CANCER SURGERY / RADICALCYSTECTOMY ANIMATION BY DR VIMALATHITHAN
A radical cystectomy is done in an attempt to cure your cancer that has invaded
the bladder wall.
Radical Cystectomy is a surgery to remove the urinary bladder along with the
lymph nodes .
If you’ve had your bladder removed, you’ll need to get used to a new way to
pass urine from your body. The operation you had, called a cystectomy, is a
lifelong change. You may have to bathe differently and adjust your travel habits. It
can affect your body image, and you may worry about its impact on
your relationships and sex life.
With enough time, you should be able to do almost everything you did before.
Even if you now use a urostomy bag (to collect your urine), you can go back to
work, exercise, and swim. People might not even notice you until you tell them.
After having your bladder removed, your surgeon also needs to create a urinary
diversion — a new way to store urine and have it leave your body.

Ileal conduit: Your surgeon disconnects a short portion of your
small intestine called the ileum.
o The ureters (tubes that carry urine from the kidney to the
bladder) are attached to one end of the ileum, while the
other end of the ileum is attached to an opening in the skin
called a stoma.
o A plastic appliance (ostomy bag) is placed over the stoma
to collect urine.
Neobladder reconstruction, also called orthotopic neobladder
reconstruction, is one option for urinary diversion. During
the procedure, your surgeon uses a piece of intestine to
create a new bladder that allows you to urinate voluntarily
and maintain continence.
What is an Indiana pouch bladder?
What is an Indiana pouch? The Indiana pouch is a continent
catherizable urine pouch. The urine pouch is made out of bowel
To drain the urine, a catheter is pushed through the bowel at the level of the skin
(the stoma) and down into the colon pouch.
Then by gravity, the urine drains out of the pouch. Once the urine has drained,
the catheter is removed. It is a continent reservoir.
