There are many types of anal cancer, one of which is squamous cell cancer which is 80% of all anal cancers. Many types of squamous cell anal cancer exist, and called epidermoid cancers sometimes.
Adenocarcinoma is a rarer type, affecting the glandular cells in the transitional zone. Basal cell carcinoma and melanoma are other types of anal cancer. Carcinoma in situ is when the cells on the surface layer of the anus look like cancer cells but have not grown into the deeper layers, and may also be called Bowen disease. True anal cancer can result from this form of pre-cancer.
