People with blood cancers may be at higher risk of prolonged infection and death from COVID-19 than people with solid tumors. That is because patients with blood cancers often have abnormal or depleted levels of immune cells that produce antibodies against viruses. However, it's important to look at all the other factors accompanying a cancer diagnosis like age and measures of frailty. Despite immunotherapy having no likely effect on COVID-19 outcomes, many of these patients will find themselves in the high-risk group for various other reasons. Dexamethasone is commonly used as an antiemetic for patients with cancer and is recommended for the treatment of certain patients with COVID-19.

More recently, scientists reported that THC and other cannabinoids such as CBD slow growth and/or cause death in certain types of cancer cells growing in lab dishes. Some animal studies also suggest certain cannabinoids may slow growth and reduce spread of some forms of cancer. -cancer.org

A new study published in Science Advances reports evidence that cannabidiol (CBD), a product of the cannabis plant, can inhibit infection by SARS-CoV-2 in human cells and in mice. CBD inhibits replication in part by up-regulating the host IRE1α ribonuclease endoplasmic reticulum (ER). SARS-CoV-2 is the virus that causes COVID-19.
