Bile duct injury means bile duct getting cut, ligated or getting burnt during gall bladder removal. Fortunately it happens only in less than 1% patients in India, but such patients can have prolonged hospitalization, morbidity and even death if proper diagnosis and treatment is not done. Injury leads to bile leakage into the abdomen or obstruction in flow of normal bile passage into the intestine.
Such injuries are best managed in a tertiary care centre where hepatobiliary trained surgeon, interventional gastroenterologist and radiologist take decision as a team. For limited biliary leaks, endoscopic procedures are sufficient. However for larger leaks or complications such as biliary stricture, portal hypertension, the specialist surgeon can reconstruct this damaged bile duct (bile duct repair after cholecystectomy) by an open/laparoscopic surgical procedure. Surgery in experienced steady hands is associated with excellent long-term results and complete resolution of the problem forever.
Dr Vivek Mangla performed surgical repair of bile duct injury sustained by this patient during cholecystectomy elsewhere in some small nursing home setup in Delhi NCR. He is thankful to the patient for this review video testimonial.
