Stoma – Types of Stoma and Living with a Stoma Bag
NUH stoma nurse shares about the types of stoma and tips on how to live with a stoma.
Stoma is an opening which is surgically created from an internal organ like large intestine or small intestine through the skin onto the abdomen to help in the removal of bodily wastes such as stools or urine.
There are three types of stoma:
1) Colostomy - stoma created from the large intestine
2) Ileostomy - stoma created from the small intestine
3) Urostomy – a stoma created by attaching the ends of ureters to a section of small intestine to divert urine
Tips on living with a stoma
- Avoid putting on tight belt or waistband directly over stoma
- Avoid lifting heavy items more than 2 kg
- Continue your regular exercises but consult stoma nurse if you wish to resume strenuous exercises
- Hand-carry sufficient stoma appliance when travelling
- Resume usual sexual activities but discuss with spouse about physical changes that have occurred after surgery
