Prostate cancer is treatable, but the male sex hormone testosterone, an androgen, can fuel the growth of prostate cancer cells, accelerating the disease. To reduce the amount of testosterone a man’s body produces, helping slow cancer’s growth, some men may require a hormone therapy called androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) to help improve survival rates. However, ADT treatment can have long-lasting side effects, diminishing a man’s quality of life. These side effects may include hot flashes, osteoporosis, weight gain, loss of muscle mass, and changes in sexual function.
