Dr. Ramon Jimenez, Chief of Melanoma and Soft Tissue Sarcoma Surgery with Miami Cancer Institute, says some melanomas can be very superficial and not progress fast enough, but other people can have a melanoma that grows right in front of your eyes.

There are 5 stages of melanoma: stage 0 (confined to the top layer of skin), stage 1 (confined to the skin, but has grown thicker), stage 2 (it has grown thicker, skin may have broken open), stage 3 (it has spread to lymph nodes or nearby skin), and stage 4 (it has spread to an internal organ).
