Dr. Shilpen Patel of the University of Washington presents his lecture, "Advances in the Management of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer" at the Greater Horn Oncology Symposium (GHOS) on March 24, 2014.
GHOS was a multidisciplinary oncology symposium designed to improve access to cancer care in the Greater Horn of Africa and as a forum for exchange of ideas between oncologists from around the world. The event was hosted by Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center (KCMC) in Moshi, Tanzania on March 24 and 25, 2014.
The event was organized by Radiating Hope, a US-based non-profit organization founded by radiation oncologists Brandon Fisher and Larry Daugherty, with the leadership of Dr Mira Shah, a radiation oncologist with the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, and support of Charlie Wittmack, a humanitarian-attorney and the President of Charity-Launch.
During the symposium, lecturers discussed common local malignancies, early detection, and treatment. Specific topics included telemedicine, cervical cancer screening, sarcoma brachytherapy and breast brachytherapy, among other topics focusing on cancer care, prevention, early detection as well as treatment. The event also included industry panels, which were assembled to discuss the future of cancer treatment in the region as well as what physical facilities should be built to best serve Tanzania.
