Saving His Eye Saved His Life Thanks to USC Roski Eye Institute Surgeon
Arnold Michels had spent more than a decade dealing with numerous procedures to address the problems in his left eye including retinal detachments and bleeding. But when his eyesight began to diminish and darken and he finally lost sight in that eye he was referred to Dr. Jesse Berry, an expert ocular oncologist and surgeon, at the USC Roski Eye Institute. She diagnosed Arnold with choroidal melanoma - a tumor in his eye. Dr. Berry understood Arnold's wish to "keep his eye" at all costs even though he could no longer see with it. Through their journey together, she did just that. Using a new treatment called brachytherapy and specialized eye plaque developed at USC, Dr. Berry implanted tiny eye plaque plates to deliver radiation precisely just to the tumor in the eye avoiding other healthy tissue. Today, Arnold is back to hiking and being in his beloved mountain area home with his family.
