Dr. Mrinal Patnaik, Consultant in Hematology from Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, updates clinicians in his article appearing in the October 2018 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, on a model developed to better estimate survival prognoses for patients with myelodysplastic syndromes utilizing genetic advances. He includes the discovery that the SF3B1 gene has a protective agent, that the ASXL1 gene has deleterious effects, and notes the model was validated in a corresponding Taiwanese population.
