It is a rare tumor that begins in certain nerve cells that are dispersed throughout the body. This tumor can affect people of any age. About 30% of head and neck paragangliomas are associated with Gene Mutations. The tumor is often slow growing and noncancerous. But it can invade nearby parts of the body, become cancerous and spread distantly. Surgery to remove the tumor is usually the first treatment choice for a paraganglioma, if feasible. If left untreated, a paraganglioma can result in severe or life-threatening damage and progress to the point where surgical treatment isn't an option. Medicine and other treatments can help control the disease and symptoms and even extend survival.
