Dr. Aref Al-Kali, a Consultant in Hematology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, looks at results from his study appearing in the August 2019 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, which, using National cancer data and looking at over 50,000 patients with myelodysplastic syndromes, noted worse outcomes not surprisingly, in the elderly, in Whites, and in males, but surprisingly found a correlation between worse outcomes and those patients on Medicare or who were not treated at an academic medical center. It is unclear why the latter results were noted, but given that no new drug treatments have been developed since 2006 for this difficult to diagnose patient population, further research is needed.
