Ohio State team focusing on inflammatory breast cancer care
By teaming up to treat inflammatory breast cancer, Ohio State doctors are meeting the unique needs of each patient with this rare, aggressive form of the disease.
In cases of inflammatory breast cancer, cancer cells block lymph vessels in the skin of a patient’s breast, which can cause visible swelling and redness.
While rare — approximately one to five percent of breast cancer cases — the nature of the condition sometimes makes it more difficult to diagnose in early than other types of the disease, which can lead to difficulties with treatment.
To improve outcomes for patients, the OSUCCC – James is developing a team of experts dedicated solely to the treatment of inflammatory breast cancer.
The members of that dedicated team work every day with their colleagues throughout The James to conduct innovative research, while providing comprehensive treatment tailored to each patient’s unique case.
“The whole purpose of the program is to address the needs of patients who are diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer,” Ko Un Clara Park, MD, says. “We’re able to offer patients comprehensive multidisciplinary care from multiple different providers who have explicit expertise and experience.”
