Nigel Deekes was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) four years ago at the age of 45 following a routine blood test after suffering from flashing his eye.

Following his diagnosis and discovering that a lot of the information on CML was out of date, not relevant to UK patients and too formal, he set up a Facebook Group, CML UK, which allowed CML patients to chat privately and informally on the things that affect then on a daily basis.

Nigel said: "Many people are sacred witless in the first days and weeks. But people can go on the group, say 'I'm new, am I going to be okay?' and hundreds of people will respond and say, 'actually, yes you are'.
