Recent discoveries have shown that childhood brain tumors arise through oncogenic transformation of cells in specific functional states within the developing brain, typically neural progenitors or stem cells. These transforming mutations often disrupt epigenetic mechanisms that control the expression of ensembles of genes critical for cellular differentiation. Treatment strategies to target these mechanisms are in development.
