Paul had been diagnosed in 1997 with metastases so advanced that the surgeons and cancer specialists had given him no hope of recovery or survival. In this interview he recounts his first reactions to finding out he had mesothelioma cancer.
In this video we ask: Tell us a little about how you reacted when you were diagnosed with mesothelioma.
Here is what he had to say:
Well, to be told I have cancer and only a short amount of time to live, is devastating. But when the cancer is an accidental find, while undergoing minor abdominal surgery, the shock was all the more profound.
And while my immediate reaction was fear and deep sadness, my wife reacted to the dire situation in another way. We both had a deep interest in natural health, and despite the shock of the diagnosis, I remember her asking me: "Where can I buy some organic carrots to start juicing today?" Her positive attitude regarding the possibilities of healing directed our cancer journey right from the very beginning.
Once the initial shock had worn off, I was determined to give myself the maximum opportunity to heal by seeing the diagnosis as a message to redirect my life. I set about researching my disease, and soon realised that while the mesothelioma survival statistics were very poor and very few survived, that instead of giving into despair and hopelessness, I could do much to help my situation, I could do much to help my situation and give my body the best possible chance to control this illness, and to maintain my quality of life.
