Edward Wolin, MD, from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, discusses the team approach needed to care for a person with neuroendocrine tumors (NETs).

NETs are a group of rare cancers that begin in neuroendocrine cells. Most of these tumors arise from the gastrointestinal tract, lungs, appendix, or thymus but the more we learn about NETs, the more we are learning that the tumors can begin in many parts of the body.

As Dr. Wolin explains, the multiple systems involved in NETs means that several specialties may be needed to care for these individuals. Specialists can include endocrinologists, oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, gastroenterologists, pulmonologists, cardiologists, and family physicians.
