Maggie's Hair Blessings: Hair stylist makes custom wigs for women battling cancer
BOND HILL, Ohio (WKRC) - There’s magic in her hands. She’s fast, but Damia Engleman is also precise with each cut and every bend of the flat iron. Engleman’s gift is styling hair.
“Having your hair done and waking up -- it just does something to you, does something for you,“ Engleman said.
She works at Khyra Hair Salon, but now she is using her skills for free to help Florence Malone. Malone explained why:
“In June of this year, 2019, I was diagnosed with stage 2 triple-negative breast cancer,“ Malone said. “Triple-negative is a very aggressive cancer that’s more prone for African-American women, and so they had to treat it very aggressively.“
Malone began losing her hair after chemotherapy. She heard about Engleman’s charity called, “Maggie’s Hair Blessings”.
Engleman said, “I make custom wigs for cancer patients and survivors. I make them all by hand and everyone gets them for free for the whole month of October.“
Engleman has loved doing hair for years, but this particular charity has a special place in her heart. She does all of this in memory of her grandmother, Maggie Daniels.
“She was diagnosed with cancer, then she was in remission and then it came back,“ Engleman said.
Although Maggie never lost her hair while she battled cancer, Engleman decided to name her charity after her grandmother.
“Sometimes it’s devastating to women to lose our hair because we are not used to it. Not to say they are not beautiful with the bald head, but, you know, it makes us. It’s a part of us,” Engleman said.
Malone finally got to see her new look as Engleman spun the chair around toward the mirror and the tears in Malone’s eyes remind Engleman that her grandmother would be proud.
“This is really, really beautiful. I love this,” Malone said.
Engleman’s fifth annual “Maggie’s Hair Blessings” wig giveaway is Saturday from 7-11 p.m. It’s at 2631 Gilbert Avenue in Walnut Hills. There is a $5 fee.
