HEAL Collaborative hosted their Pastors & Policymakers' Roundtable to discuss biomarker testing and the impacts lung cancer has on African Americans in Frankfort, Kentucky on February 28, 2023.

African Americans have the highest mortality rate when it comes to lung cancer. Lung cancer screening director, Dr. Michael Gieske, was the keynote speaker. He shared the importance of screening and biomarker testing. Kentucky has made great strides in the number of yearly lung cancer screenings. Early detection is key to better outcomes.

Medical professionals, pastors, legislators, and community leaders gathered to learn more about biomarker testing and to share their insight on available resources.

Biomarker testing looks for mutations, additions, deletions, or rearrangements in DNA. Biomarker testing can also help look for other key markers like levels of certain proteins or the amount of tumor DNA in the blood. Knowing this information can help influence treatment options.
