Dave deBronkart, known as e-Patient Dave, was diagnosed with stage IV kidney cancer in 2007.

To save his life, he was willing to do anything he could to understand the situation and potentially help his doctors cure him. Since e-Patient Dave's hospital had electronic health records (EHRs), he was able to look at portions of his health record and learn more about his condition.

By having access to his own EHRs, he was able to research his condition and connect meaningfully with other cancer patients in an online patient portal. As a result, he learned of a new treatment method, and through the use of EHRs his doctors were able to quickly and easily coordinate his care.

As a result, within six months, he completed treatments and beat cancer. Today, e-Patient Dave spreads the message of how EHRs are imperative to the quality of healthcare you receive through the simple and easy way they allow for coordination between patients and doctors.
