Quite often patients suffering from cancer are abandoned by their families owing to medical expenses and the burden of providing care. Many are elderly from financially weak backgrounds and are not only left fighting the disease alone, but also face the sorrow and suffering that comes with abandonment.

According to Dr Dewan, many suffering from cancer whose condition has deteriorated due to neglect, have open wounds that need to be regularly dressed. Some also require proper nutrition through tube feeding. Without receiving medical treatment, abandoned elderly cancer patients struggle with pain and survival each passing day.

“I ensure we care for patients as I would care for a member of my own family or how I would want to be cared for when my time comes,” says Dr Dewan while speaking about the need for proper care of cancer patients.

Apart from operating the Ganga Prem Hospice at Rishikesh, Dr Dewan’s Shradha Cancer Care Trust also provides home care services and weekly clinics in different areas of Uttarakhand to reach out to many more cancer patients.
