The Link Between Hair Straightening Chemicals and Uterine Cancer

Data from 33,497 women in the United States ages 35-75 in the Sister Study, found that frequent users of hair relaxers are twice as likely to develop uterine cancer by the age of 70.

Black and Latina Women at Higher Risk

Due to the prevalence of hair relaxer use by Latina and African American women, they may be at higher risk to develop uterine cancer. According to the Sister Study, approximately 60% of the participants were self-identified Black women who reported using straighteners in the previous year.

“Because Black women use hair straightening or relaxer products more frequently and tend to initiate use at earlier ages than other races and ethnicities, these findings may be even more relevant for them,” Che-Jung Chang, Ph.D., an author on the Sister Study and a research fellow in the NIEHS Epidemiology Branch.
