Friedreich's Ataxia Clinical Trials
The USF Health Ataxia Research Center is 1 of 11 centers that are a part of the Collaborative Clinical Research Network in Friedreich's Ataxia (CCRN in FA) funded by the Friedreich's Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA). This international network works togethers to advance treatments and clinical care for Friedreich's Ataxia patients. "Friedreich Ataxia is a neurodegenerative disease that primarily affects children and young adults and progresses through life," says Theresa Zesiewicz, MD, FAAN, director of USF Health Ataxia Research Center, professor of neurology. "It really robs people of their ability to walk and function and speak." As a part of the CCRN in FA, USF Health collaborates with pharmaceutical companies, government agencies and other research centers and the patient community to facilitate clinical research and trials needed to identify new therapies. For the last ten years, USF Health has also partnered with FARA to host a scientific symposium that brings together FA researchers, physicians, patients, and caregivers.
