Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP) is seen in young people and characterized by innumerable adenomatous polyps which have a high tendency to develop into malignancy. Syndrome is autosomal dominant however around a 1/3 are spontaneous. Polyps can develop in both the bowel (usually colon) and stomach and especially in the peri-ampullary region (duodenum) when it occurs outside of the colon. Patient's are at risk for other extracolonic malignancies as well.
Gardner syndrome: FAP including osteomas(especially mandible), desmoid tumors, and dental anomalies. Sebaceous cysts,ย ย mesenteric fibromatosis, and thyroid papillary cancers can also occur.
