Childhood Cancer : Cure rates for medulloblastoma and Glioma tumors
Medical Oncologist Dr Vasudha gives us an overview of Medulloblastoma which is a type of brain tumor that arises from the posterior part of the brain called the cerebellum. It is not very easy to generalize the cure rates because medulloblastoma has got many subtypes and the age at which the child is diagnosed plays an important role.
As an overview, for standard-risk medulloblastoma, the cure rates are about 60% - 70% and for the high-risk medulloblastoma, the cure rates are about 40%-50%.
Glioma is a type of tumor that occurs in the brain and spinal cord, there are two types:
Low-Grade Glioma: It's more often like a chronic health condition - the survival rates are about 90% but due to the location of the tumor and its persistent nature - it causes morbidity ( loss of vision and hearing).
Unfortunately, High-Grade Gliomas have very low survival rates even today.
